The Roses reimagines the darkly comic 1989 classic The War of the Roses with a fresh take on love, power, and the unraveling of a marriage. When Oliver and Barbara Rose (Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman) decide to divorce after years of building a seemingly perfect life together, their split quickly spirals into an all-out war. Neither is willing to give up the sprawling home they once shared, and what begins as a battle of words escalates into a ruthless, escalating fight where no tactic is too extreme.
Directed by Jay Roach, The Roses balances biting satire with emotional intensity, examining what happens when love curdles into resentment and possession becomes more important than happiness. Brutally funny and shockingly relatable, the film asks: how far would you go to win when the prize is everything you’ve already lost?
