THE TESTAMENT OF
ANN LEE (R)

2 hours, 17 minutes

From acclaimed writer-director Mona Fastvold comes a bold reimagining of the true story of Ann Lee, the visionary founder of the Shakers. Amanda Seyfried delivers a commanding performance as the movement’s charismatic leader, whose radical beliefs in gender and social equality inspired fierce devotion—and deep controversy. Blending history with lyrical invention, The Testament of Ann Lee traces the ecstasy and sacrifice of Lee’s pursuit of a spiritual utopia. The film is infused with more than a dozen traditional Shaker hymns, transformed into striking musical sequences with choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall, alongside an evocative original score and songs by Daniel Blumberg. At once intimate and rapturous, the film is a singular portrait of faith, devotion, and the cost of visionary change.

“[Ann Lee] would be the leader of one of the most influential religious sects in the New World. But it would all happen in a very strange way, and that is the story told in The Testament of Ann Lee, Mona Fastvold’s singular, astonishing, otherworldly biographical musical about the founder and spiritual leader of the Shakers. That’s a lot of adjectives, I know, but I can’t pick one to remove — and even those don’t quite capture how unusual and terrific this movie is."

“The Testament of Ann Lee is primarily a film about the pull and power of belief. Delivered in a style that evokes its historical moment while also cutting across time to the present, it lands with the enthralling, incantatory force of urgent prayer.”
