Based on a true story, Out of Africa follows the life of Karen Blixen, a Danish baroness portrayed by Meryl Streep, who establishes a plantation in early 20th-century colonial Kenya. Her journey unfolds through a marriage of convenience, the challenges of life and work in Africa, and a sweeping love affair with Denys Finch-Hatton — a free-spirited big-game hunter played by Redford. The film is adapted from Blixen’s writings under her pen name, Isak Dinesen, and notably, nearly 70% of the movie was filmed on location in Kenya.

During filming, Streep and Redford developed a deep off-screen connection rooted in mutual admiration and respect — a bond that translated into the film’s unforgettable intimacy. Director Sydney Pollack famously noted their natural chemistry, while Streep later said she felt “safe and truly seen” working with Redford, calling him a wonderful collaborator and “the best kisser.” Redford, in turn, praised Streep as the most complete actress he had ever worked with. Their relationship remained one of trust, artistry, and enduring friendship.

One of the film’s most tender moments — when Denys washes Karen’s hair — includes a quotation from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The line, “He prayeth well, who loveth well both man and bird and beast,” is inscribed on the real Denys Finch-Hatton’s gravestone.

“There comes a time in movie addicts’ lives when their souls cry out for the kind of film that can fill the screen with magnificent vistas, grand passions and charismatic actors. That’s why the arrival of Out of Africa is cause for cheering.”

Out of Africa is a stunner, a freak, a rarity, a miracle. It’s a genuine movie for grown-ups that’s moving, sweet and deeply romantic.” – Stephen Hunter, Baltimore Sun
