SHOSHANA (NR)

2 hours, 4 minutes

In this edge-of-your-seat thriller inspired by real events, a British police officer and a Jewish woman fall in love amidst the political turmoil of 1930s Tel Aviv. With British control over Palestine precarious and conflict inevitable, everyone is forced to choose a side. From acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom comes Shoshana, a gripping historical thriller that blends forbidden romance with the political turmoil of the Middle East in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

Set in British Mandatory Palestine, the film tells the true story of Shoshana Borochov (Irina Starshenbaum), the idealistic daughter of a Zionist labor movement co-founder, who falls in love with Tom Wilkin (Douglas Booth), a British police officer charged with maintaining order in an increasingly volatile Tel Aviv. Their relationship is tested as Tom and his colleague Geoffrey Morton (Harry Melling) hunt down Zionist militant Avraham Stern (Aury Alby), igniting a conflict that divides allegiances and shatters trust.

Against the backdrop of mounting resistance movements, the rise of extremist factions, and the chaos of World War II, Shoshana weaves together a sweeping love story and a political thriller. The film explores not only the dangers of rebellion and the brutality of colonial rule but also the personal cost of devotion—to ideals, to a cause, and to one another.

Anchored by powerful performances and enhanced with authentic documentary footage, Shoshana immerses audiences in a world where passion collides with politics, and where choices made in love can reverberate through history.

Shoshana is more than a biographical drama—it’s a story of resistance, sacrifice, and the human heart under fire.

“In addition to boasting an impressive production design,
it is beautifully filmed.”

“Impressively, director Winterbottom understands the history of this land volatility and is able symbolically to express it through star-crossed lovers. Irina Starshenbaum as Soshana deftly creates a character whose loyalties and legacy are tested. Shalom.”
